چکیده

W e describe an approach to parsing and logical translation that was inspired by Gazdar's work on context free grammar for English. Each grammar rule consists o f a syntactic part that specifies an acceptable fragment of a parse tree, and a semantic part that specifies how the logical formulas corresponding to the constituents of the fragment are to be combined to yield the formula for the fragment. However, we have sought to reformulate Gazdar's semantic rules so as to obtain more or less 'conventional' logical translations of English sentences, avoiding the interpretation of NPs as property sets and the use of intensional functors other than certain propositional operators. The reformulated semantic rules often turn out to be slightly simpler than Gazdar's. Moreover, by using a semantically ambiguous logical syntax for the preliminary translations, we can account for quantifier and coordinator scope ambiguities in syntactically unambiguous sentences without recourse to multiple semantic rules, and are able to separate the disambiguation process from the operation of the parser-translator. We have implemented simple recursive descent and left -corner parsers to demonstrate the practicality of our approach.

The Rosetta project

The Rosetta project has its roots in an earlier research project at Philips Research Laboratories, called PHLIQA (cf. Bronnenberg et al. (1)). In this project a system was developed that answered questions posed in natural English about information stored in a data base. The first component of that system had the task to convert a question into an expression of a logical language. This was done...

A Translation from Logic to English with Dynamic Semantics

We present a procedure for translating standard predicate logic into English. The procedure generates both referring expressions and non-referring expressions, including both referential and bound variable anaphora. Non-referring expressions correspond to short-term discourse referents [1], which present a special set of challenges for a natural language generation system: (i) they have limited...

Machine methods of proving logical arguments expressed in English

This paper describes a COMIT program that proves the validity of logical arguments expressed in a restricted form of ordinary English. Some special features include its ability to translate an input argument into logical notation in four progressively refined ways, of which the first pertains to propositional logic and the last three to first-order functional logic; and its ability in many case...

A Controlled Quantification in Parsing of Montague Grammar

Montague grammar [5] provides a good framework for a direct translation from a natural language sentence into its logical formulas. This is enabled by the fact that every syntactic rule has its corresponding translation rule. As soon as a subphrase is recognized by a syntactic rule, its corresponding translation rule translates the recognized subphrase into its logical formula. M-grammar of Lan...
